October’s National Pedestrian Safety Month Puts Spotlight on Pedestrian Accidents Across Georgia

As Macon-Bibb prepares for a local pedestrian safety summit and Georgia communities promote safer walking, Dozier Law Firm highlights the risks facing the state’s most vulnerable road users.

MACON, Ga. – October 01, 2026 – National Pedestrian Safety Month arrives this October amid renewed efforts in Macon and across Georgia to reduce crashes involving people traveling on foot, as transportation officials, community leaders and safety advocates continue addressing pedestrian deaths on the state’s roadways.

Georgia recorded 257 pedestrian deaths in 2025, according to current Georgia Department of Transportation pedestrian safety information. The continuing toll has made pedestrian safety an important component of statewide efforts to reduce serious injuries and fatalities.

The issue will receive particular attention locally on Oct. 1, when the Macon-Bibb County Pedestrian Safety Review Board hosts its 2026 Safety Summit in recognition of National Pedestrian Safety Month.

The public event is expected to bring together residents, community leaders and safety advocates to discuss ongoing roadway safety initiatives and ways to improve conditions for people walking, biking and driving throughout Macon-Bibb County.

October will also bring increased pedestrian activity around some Georgia schools. International Walk & Roll to School Day is scheduled for Oct. 7, with participating schools and communities using the event to educate drivers about pedestrian and school-zone safety while teaching children safer walking practices.

For attorneys who represent people injured in traffic crashes, the month’s increased focus on pedestrian safety highlights an important reality: People traveling on foot have virtually none of the physical protection available to occupants of motor vehicles.

“Pedestrian accidents can produce devastating injuries in a matter of seconds,” said a representative from Dozier Law Firm. “Drivers have a responsibility to pay attention to the people around them, particularly at intersections, crosswalks, school zones and other areas with pedestrian activity. When a serious collision occurs, determining exactly what happened is critical for the injured person and their family.”

Pedestrian crashes can result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, fractures, internal injuries and permanent disabilities. In fatal cases, surviving family members may also face substantial emotional and financial consequences.

Visibility becomes another significant concern as Georgia moves deeper into fall and daylight hours become shorter. Georgia’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan identifies nighttime conditions as an important pedestrian safety issue, while Georgia DOT continues urging drivers to slow down and actively watch for people walking.

Technology is also becoming a larger part of the pedestrian safety conversation.

In September, federal transportation officials released the first pedestrian-protection assessments conducted through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program for 2027 model-year vehicles. The assessments evaluate how vehicle design affects potential injuries to a pedestrian’s head, hips, legs and knees during a collision.

The development reflects a broader shift in vehicle safety that increasingly considers people outside the automobile in addition to protecting vehicle occupants.

For pedestrians who are struck by a vehicle, determining liability may require examining numerous forms of evidence. Driver distraction, vehicle speed, failure to yield, impairment, roadway lighting, traffic signals and intersection design can all become relevant.

Video can be particularly valuable. Surveillance systems at nearby businesses, residential doorbell cameras, traffic cameras and vehicle-mounted cameras may capture critical evidence, but some recordings can be overwritten or deleted relatively quickly.

Dozier Law Firm encourages people injured in pedestrian accidents to obtain appropriate medical care and preserve available information about the collision, including photographs, witness contact information and accident documentation.

As Georgia communities recognize National Pedestrian Safety Month throughout October, motorists are encouraged to slow down, eliminate distractions and remain particularly attentive around crosswalks, schools, neighborhoods and intersections.

Newsworthiness Justification

October 2026 brings an unusual convergence of pedestrian safety initiatives at the national, state and local levels. National Pedestrian Safety Month coincides with Macon-Bibb County’s Oct. 1 Pedestrian Safety Summit, Georgia’s Oct. 7 International Walk & Roll to School Day and the recent introduction of federal pedestrian-protection testing for new vehicles. With Georgia reporting 257 pedestrian deaths in 2025, the month’s focus on preventing pedestrian crashes has immediate relevance for drivers, families and communities throughout the state.
